Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka's most important ancient capitals and one of the best places to understand the scale of early Sinhala civilization. Unlike a compact ruin site, it spreads across a wide sacred landscape of stupas, monasteries, reservoirs, stone carvings, pilgrimage paths, and active Buddhist worship.

The city is deeply tied to Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred Bo tree that remains one of the most revered sites in the country. Nearby, massive stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya show the ambition, engineering skill, and religious devotion of ancient Anuradhapura. Without context, these monuments can feel separate; with a guide, they become part of a connected story.

Because many sites are still living places of worship, etiquette matters. Visitors should think about clothing, footwear, photography, temple behavior, and the rhythm of local pilgrims. Understanding this respectfully makes the experience more meaningful and avoids treating sacred places as only archaeological stops.

The practical side also matters because Anuradhapura is large, hot, and spread out. A guide can plan transport between sites, choose a sensible order, include shade and water breaks, explain which monuments need more time, and pair the ancient city with Mihintale, Wilpattu, Sigiriya, or Polonnaruwa when the wider itinerary allows.
